Originally a cookie factory, Chelsea Market is the birthplace of the legendary OREO cookie.
Located just a short stroll from the new NYC hip urban hub Hudson Yards.
Located right under the High Line park in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, Chelsea Market is a paradise for foodies, offering an array of restaurants from all over the world. A more proper word to describe Chelsea Market would be “food mall” because of its design when you can walk from one restaurant to the next.
Chelsea Market was transformed into its current form in 1997 from what was originally a factory complex of the National Biscuit Company. Owned by Google’s owner Alphabet Inc. from 2018 when the company paid $2.4 billion, one of the most expensive single building real estate transactions in the history of New York City.
Did you know that the OREO cookie was invented in this building in 1912? The OREO cookies were both developed and produced in the building up until 1958 when the production was relocated outside Manhattan.
Located in the Gansevoort Market Historic District, you can explore other interesting attractions, such as the High Line Park (in the photo above), a 1.5-mile (2.3 km) long elevated park, built on a former railroad spur, full of green areas.
